MCAS Information

For the first time ever, this year's MCAS Parent Reports will include growth model data. We recognize that this is a new, and somewhat confusing system, that may leave you with questions. To help address that need we have developed an online tutorial geared specifically for parents. The tutorial is in PowerPoint format with audio, but requires no special software to use.  The tutorial is posted at: http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/growth/tutorial2.html

What is Study Island?

  1. Study Island is an all online product designed to help your child master the standards specific to their grade in your state. Students in grades 2 through 5 at Callahan will have access to Study Island at school and at home.

Fast Facts –

  1. Every student has their own username and password.

  2. The program is divided into sections based on subject.

  3. Each subject is made up of topics, each of which corresponds to a specific state standard.

  4. Each topic contains lessons, practice questions and explanations.

  5. Most topics are accompanied by a lesson which includes some brief information about the material covered by the questions in the topic.

  6. Your child can also incorporate games into their studies while on Study Island, if the school allows.

How do I login to Study Island?

  1. www.studyisland.com

How does my child use Study Island?

  1. After signing in on Study Island’s home page, click the subject tab on which you wish to work or check your student’s class page for assignments created by your child’s teacher.

  2. To pass a topic, your child must satisfy the topic’s passing requirements which are based on a minimum number of questions answered and a minimum percentage correct. A blue ribbon is displayed next to all passed topics.

  3. Once your child has passed all the topics in the subject, he or she will have to pass the Post Test for the subject. Ignore this step if the subject has no Post Test.

  4. Once your child passes all topics in all sections, he has completed the Study Island program.

How do I monitor my child’s progress?

  1. Login to Study Island.

  2. Click on one of the subject reports on the left hand side of the screen. You can view reports by subject or a summary report of all subjects.

  3. You can view each topic’s statistics or click on suggested topics to see your child’s strengths and weaknesses.
